Osnabrück/Herzogenrath - in a workshop of the company Meta engine and energy engineering in Herzogenrath is located into individual parts of divided passenger cars. That is so far nothing amazing - the drive of the car would not be a prototype for an innovative natural gas engine. The alternative fuel can be in times of rising Spritkosten an economical variant: “We want to reduce consumption so far that the driver of a gas car must pay only four instead of momentarily five euro on 100 kilometers”, means joint venture leader Dr. Peter Kreuter. To the comparison: As Benziner the passenger car costs approximately ten euro on the distance. The German federal donation environment (DBU) supports the project with 300.000 euro. Finally the alternative fuel preserves also the environment: The further developed natural gas engine is up to 40 per cent fewer carbon dioxide from the exhaust pusten than a Benziner. In order to achieve these goals, the Mittelständler combines for the first time three well-known technical beginnings.

“Differently than in many sectors from traffic outgoing carbon dioxide exhaust gases between 1990 and 2000 over over twelve per cent”, quoted DBU Secretary-General Dr. Fritz Brickwedde a Federal Office for Environment Protection study rose. In order to avoid greenhouse gases, engines would have to be optimized in such a way that they use less energy.

“In addition we should use alternative fuels, which do not produce so much carbon dioxide”, so Brickwedde. The project of the company Meta unites both solutions: The coworkers improve the engine, in order to burn the alternative fuel natural gas more effectively. A project, which is worthwhile itself: “We assume the number of the vehicles operated with natural gas means itself in the coming years clearly increased”, Brickwedde.

“Our technology is compatibly white with each Otto engine”, Kreuter. The energy technicians actually use already well-known components. With the help of a turbocharger they want to improve the air supply to the cylinder. “In addition we arrange the gas exchange of exhaust gases and combustion air more energy-saving with the help of a special valve gear”, describe Kreuter. Both aspects aim at the fact off that the engine fewer gas used up and so that also fewer carbon dioxides produces. In addition it is to be avoided with the new technology that the engine at achievement, operated with natural gas, loses - a problem, which stood so far to some re-equipment in the way.

The test vehicle of the company Meta saves alone approximately 20 per cent carbon dioxide through the fact that the coworkers for the natural gas use reequipped it. “A turbo ensures besides for it that much air is sufficient in the cylinder, thus the achievement with smaller piston displacement remains constant”, says Kreuter. In place of the two-litre origin engine rich such a 1,4-Liter-Antrieb. Ever smaller stroke areas with less friction and weight with same achievement: “Downsizing” calls itself the principle, which is to save approximately ten per cent carbon dioxide in this project. And more quietly the engine is thereby also.

The third technical detail is a special intake valve price increase in the cylinder head: It replaces the so-called butterfly valve, which regulates the inflow at fresh air in normal Otto engines. But the more strongly this the supply limited, the more largely becomes the negative pressure between flap and cylinder. Against resistance to work, achievement and fuel therefore costs. “The gas exchange with the engine is comparable with in and breathing out with humans. With a butterfly valve the engine works as we with cold: By the swollen mucous membranes breathing exerts us far from more. With the new throttle-free control the engine can breathe more freely”, explains Kreuter. That saves energy and again ten per cent carbon dioxide.

Altogether the efficiency of the drive is to improve particularly with middle and low achievement. “Therefore we expect good practice tests” in city traffic with penalties or taxes, which drive full power rarely, mean Kreuter. A success-promising innovation: According to data of the company the new vehicle to conferences of the automobile industry aroused already active interest.
